What is multiple sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic disease of autoimmune nature primarily affecting the central nervous system. Autoimmune nature of the disease refers to the way your immune system by "mistake" attacks your organism. In the case of multiple sclerosis that is the nervous cells called neurons, specifically myelin insulating layer that surrounds the neuron. The role of neurons is to process and transmit the signals inside and outside of the central nervous system with that controlling many bodily functions and the role of myelin is to guide and increase the speed at which the signal propagated down the nerve. The location and size of damaged neurons in multiple sclerosis influences the variety and intensity of the symptoms experienced by the patients. This is the reason why characteristics of this disease differs form one patient to another.

Until today 4 different types of multiple sclerosis have been accepted and defined:
. Relapsing remitting (RRMS)
. Secondary progressive (SPMS)
. Primary progressive (PPMS)
. Progressive relapsing (PRMS)

Enkorten is a treatment for relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS).
