Farmacija has made considerable progress in developing a drug targeting inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.
Autoimmune diseases are caused by abnormal immune responses, such as the immune system turning to attack not a pathogen, but normal tissue of the human body. In a typical immune response directed at a pathogen such as a virus, the immune response stops once the virus has been eliminated, often in a few days. In an autoimmune disease, however, because the immune cells are recognizing a normal component of the body, the response can carry on for many years and in some cases until the entire target (normal tissue) has been destroyed.
Affecting virtually all organs and tissues, inflammatory diseases cover a broad spectrum of seemingly unrelated disorders, including Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), Uveitis, Systemic Lupus and many others.
Current treatment strategies are mainly directed towards symptoms rather than the underlying causes of inflammation, and may cause serious side effects when used as a chronic therapy.
