Asthma is a chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder characterized by reversible attacks of bronchospasm. In asthma there is an increased tendency of the airway to react to a variety of stimuli that would not cause a response in a normal airway. By patients with asthma there is a variety of inflammatory cells (mast cells, neutrophils, and macrophages) in bronchial walls and inflammatory mediators that are released from such cells, all which may be involved in state of hyperirritability.
Asthma prevalence is constantly increasing in few last decades. Morbidity and mortality following asthma is constantly increasing despite increased use of asthma drugs. Unfortunately, the only new class of drugs introduced in last 30 years are antagonists of leucotrien receptors. That shows the importance of research for new generation of drugs which will be able to stop development and progression of asthma with a good long term prognosis and improvement quality of life of patients.
Enkorten as a combination of two peptides presents a new generation of anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory drugs with an innovative approach in asthma treatment. Enkorten is non-steroid synthesised peptide drug with an endogenous origin. Clinical phase II of investigation of efficacy and safety of Enkorten use in treatment of bronchial asthma is finished on the Clinic for lung diseases "Podhrastovi", Clinical Center of University Sarajevo.
Results showed a significant difference of most of the monitored parameters of lung functions in the group of patients which received Enkorten. 57 % patients treated with Enkorten after 6 month were reclassified to lower category of disease according to GINA criteria.
All safety parameters proved excellent safety profile of Enkorten. No serious side effects were registered during the study.
Comparison of standard treatment of bronchial asthma (topical medications of the group of agonist of beta adrenergic receptors and corticosteroids) and Enkorten demonstrated lower use of the standard treatment of bronchial asthma in the group treated with Enkorten in comparison to control group and is an additional indication of therapeutic efficacy of Enkorten.
